After giving birth to my little one, our nurse came and gave a long list of advice and instructions on how to care for newborn. One thing I distinctly remember is that they advised to use cloth nappies at least for the first 4-6 weeks. The reason being that keeping a tab on the number of times your baby has peed/pooped is necessary to ensure that your little one gets enough milk to thrive. If you use a disposable diaper, you may not exactly be able to know how many times your little one has peed.
So, use disposables only when you are going out with your baby. At home, try to use cloth nappies. Expect your newborn to use at least 10-12 nappies a day. Even if you do laundry every day, buy at least 30-35 nappies. Don’t worry. It doesn’t really cost a bomb. You can get a pack of 10 nappies in the range of Rs.300-500. So, even if you buy 30 nappies, it’s just going to cost you about the same amount you may have to spend on disposables.
First Step hosiery nappies are a good choice as it is budget friendly and are made in soft light coloured fabrics.
Once your baby is past 3 months and outgrows cloth nappies, you can switch to either cloth diapers or disposable diapers as per your choice.
1 pack of Newborn baby diapers will be enough to start. A good choice would be Pampers Newborn or Mamy Poko Xtra Small. But get a pack of just 20-24 diapers because you do not know how much your newborn will weigh. If you have a baby who is 3kg+ you may soon have to move to a Small Size Diaper instead of Newborn or Xtra Small. Moreover, most hospitals give a complimentary pack of diapers at the time of birth.
Baby wipes are mom’s best friend. Soon, you will know that wipes have a lot of uses other than wiping your baby’s bums. A great option is Mother Sparsh Baby Water Wipes because it contains 98% water and 2% aloe vera, whereas most other baby wipes are literally loaded with chemicals.
Like it or not, you will have to take your newborn out umpteen times for doctor visits, shopping etc. It would be a good idea to buy 3-4 onesies in gender-neutral colors (mix full sleeves and half sleeves depending on the climate where you live). Don’t buy too many because in just about 3 months’ time your baby will almost double his weight and outgrow all the newborn clothes.
You do have the option of buying organic clothes for your little one. But the regular ones are also perfectly fine.
Jabla as we call it! It is used as home wear and you might need about 10-15 pieces are babies are notorious for making their clothes messy.
Its advisable to keep your newborn’s feet covered while you take him out. 3-4 pairs of socks will be enough for the newborn stage provided you don’t lose them often.
As I said babies are notorious for messing up clothes and sheets. You will need a lot of swaddling clothes especially if you are planning to use cloth nappies. Buy at least 6 swaddling clothes. Don’t worry. Once your little one is past swaddling stage, you can use them as burp clothes or even towels for bathing.
If you feel its hard to swaddle using the cloth, you can also buy swaddle bags/wraps that makes things easier.
To keep your baby warm and cozy at night, buy some sleep suits. You can buy 3-4 pieces. It is highly recommended to buy sleep suits with zipper, which makes dressing and nighttime diaper changes much easier.
Ideally, get a bassinet with mosquito net that you can place on the family mattress. It makes it easy for night-time feedings. Newborns outgrow of a bassinet in 3 months. After 3 months, you can move the baby to family bed or a crib.
You will have to line your baby’s bassinet, family mattress with a waterproof sheet.
If you are on a budget, this nail scissors is a trusted option.
Another option is an electric nail trimmer so that you don’t have to worry at all about accidentally cutting your little one’s finger. But it is quite expensive comparatively.
Any number of clothes are not going to be enough. Yes, such a tiny person does consume a lot of clothes! A set of 8-12 wash clothes would be good to start with.
Keep a digital thermometer handy so that you don’t have to run about when your little one falls sick. This pacifier thermometer is a great option as once the baby grows, he might not allow you to insert the thermometer under his arms.
It’s called common cold for a reason! Be well prepared with a snot sucker that helps clear mucous out of your baby’s nose.
Receiving blankets have multitude of uses. You can use it to swaddle your baby, use it as burp cloth, provide a clean surface to lay your baby on and so on goes the list. One or two pairs of receiving blanket might be enough for a good start.
A soft brush would be handy to brush your little one’s hair and clear off the cradle crap… I mean cradle cap.

You and your newborn are going to have a ton of visitors. Of course, you won’t be comfortable breastfeeding in front of them. But when you go to a family function or hospital or for an outing, you may have to feed in public. This nursing scarf is a great option to feed discretely without compromising on your style.

Yes, your nipples are most likely going to turn sore from breastfeeding. It’s best to ask your gynecologist to prescribe a nipple cream.
Even if you don’t plan to pump and feed, a breast pump can be your savior in more than one occasion. When the milk starts coming in and you feel pretty engorged, and if your baby is asleep and in no mood to feed, breast pump might be the only way to relieve the engorgement. Not to scare you, but if in case your nipples get really sore, you may not really want to put them into your hungry baby’s mouth again. Then again, breast pump will be your savior. And of course, if you want to go for a quick outing leaving your baby with someone else, you may want to keep some milk in reserve with your baby so that he doesn’t go hungry.
It’s advisable to buy a manual breast pump if you don’t plan to use it on a long-term basis. Check out our list of best breast pump for the top picks.
You might have seen babies in sleeping bags all comfy and cuddled up. These are a must-have while taking your newborn out and they are not quite expensive too.
It’s not a necessity in India. In many western countries, the hospital doesn’t allow you to take newborn home unless baby car seat is installed. But when you think about your little one’s safety, it’s definitely a worth buying. Massaging baby with oil before bath is not only soothing, but it also helps improve baby’s muscle and bone strength. While you have a number of baby oils available in the market, I would personally recommend virgin coconut oil. Olive oil, mustard oil and ghee are not recommended if your baby’s skin is dry or broken as it is high in oleic oil.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be bath towel. If you have soft muslin cloth or a receiving blanket, that would also suffice.
Rather than bouncers, cradles and such “entertainers”, it’s always best to make the newborns lie down on a play mat on the floor. This way you give them better opportunity to try to roll over and explore around them.
You can get colourful play mats that are waterproof. The colourful pictures keep them engaged them during tummy time too.
You do get fancy night-lights online or in stores. But a zero bulb is more than enough to keep the surroundings dim enough for a good night sleep.
Note- right from day 1, when your baby sleeps during daytime, keep the curtains open and try not to make the surroundings silent for the baby to sleep, rather carry on with your activities as usual. But at night, keep everything dark and silent. This way, your baby will start realizing from the beginning itself that nighttime is for sleeping and daytime is for play. This is the best way to avoid/ correct day-night confusion which is common in newborns.

For the first three months, consult your doctor even if your newborn has a slight sniffle as they have an under developed immune system.
Usually, you will have to keep necessary medicines like paracetamol drops, colic aid, Neosporin powder (for umbilical cord) and saline drops. It is also advised to give Vitamin D drops to babies till the age of 1. But DO NOT buy anything right away. Ask your pediatrician and buy medicines only as prescribed by him/her. Do not depend on advices dispensed by fellow moms or neighbours and experiment with home remedies on newborns.
